Cheltenham News, Events and Sport | All Things Cheltenham
Big local stories can feel scattered across social feeds and rumours, so I’m pulling the week into one clear Cheltenham update you can actually use. We start with serious Gloucestershire Police developments: confirmation that no further action will be taken against a 16-year-old arrested on suspicion of murder after the Honeyborne Way incident, while a 17-year-old remains on bail and investigators continue enquiries. I also share two active appeals: one after the theft of the distinctive Cheltenham Festival artwork “Making Amends” by Claire Haggis, and another for witnesses and CCTV or dashcam footage following the Prestbury Road collision involving a cyclist and a bus, after which the woman sadly dies from her injuries.
From there, I get into the changes you’ll notice on a night out, as Cheltenham venues align with police and the council on a unified unverified ID retention policy. I also touch on the realities facing local business, from a court hearing about repeated shoplifting at Pets at Home to uncertainty in the hospitality sector as Francomanca announces multiple UK closures. With the Cheltenham Borough Council elections coming up on Thursday 7 May, I run through the key dates, including the registration deadline and the need for valid photo ID, plus the local issues that are likely to dominate the debate.
There’s plenty of good news and things to do as well. Cheltenham Town FC make it back-to-back wins with more late drama, and I give a shout-out to Be More Bob for taking the top prize in a national window display competition. On the community noticeboard, there’s a new luxury dog grooming studio, SoFetch, and a big anniversary for Hallowed Grounds Coffee. Then it’s a full Cheltenham events guide: Fringe Festival launch night at the Playhouse, local markets, Striking Comic Con, a sunrise birdsong walk at Cox’s Meadow, live music at HMV, Musical Theatre Karaoke, the Charlton Kings Village Fete, the Friends of Pittville plant sale, and a brand-new Craft Coven meetup.

Intro and Cheltenham News
SPEAKER_00Hello, I'm Reg, your host, and this is All Things Cheltenham, your weekly roundup of local news, events, sport, and community stories. Today is Sunday the 19th of April 2026. So let's get started. And as always, we start with Cheltenham Local News. Now, this is an update on a story I reported on last week. Gloucestershire police have confirmed there are no further actions will be taken against a 16-year-old boy who had been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a man in Cheltenham. The teenager was one of two arrested after an incident on Honeyborne Way earlier the month, where a man in his seventies was assaulted and later died in hospital. A second teenager, aged 17, remains on police bail while inquiries continue with the investigation now being led by the major crime investigation team. Police are continuing to appeal for information and have reminded the public not to speculate or share footage online as this could impact ongoing proceedings. Now an appeal has been launched after a distinctive piece of artwork was stolen during this year's Cheltenham Festival. The original painting titled Making Amends by artist Claire Haggis was taken from the festival on Friday, the 13th of March. The artwork is described as a highly recognizable featuring two hairs positioned nose to nose in a detailed and intimate scene, created using a mix of pencil and acrylic techniques. The piece took months to complete and is considered deeply personal to the artist, making its loss practically significant. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Gloucestershire police. Police are appealing for witnesses following the death of a woman who was involved in a collision in Cheltenham. Officers were called at around 8 50 a.m. on Monday the 16th of March for reports of a collision on Prestbury Road near the junction with Waddon Road. The incident involved a woman in her 30s who was riding a bicycle and a bus driven by a man. Emergency services attended and the woman was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital with serious injuries before being transferred to South Mead Hospital in Bristol. She remains in hospital but sadly died from her injuries on Tuesday the 7th of April. Her family are now being supported by specially trained officers while police continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. Officers are asking for anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have relevant CCTV or dash cam footage to come forward. Now Cheltenham licensed venues have come together with police and local authorities to introduce a new unverified ID retention policy across the town. Not identified, sorry, unified ID retention policy across the town. The scheme launched through Cheltenham Safe brings a constant approach to how venues deal with false or fake identification, helping to strengthen safety in the nighttime economy. Under the policy, any false ID that is handed over can be kept for up to 28 days, giving individuals the opportunity to reclaim it if they can prove their identity. However, any fake IDs will be destroyed immediately, sending a clear message that their use will not be tolerated. The initiative has been developed in partnership between licensing officers, police, venue operators and door staff, ensuring a consistent approach across all participating venues. It's hoped the policy will support businesses, protect visitors, and help educate young people about the risk of underage drinking. Now a Cheltenham shoplifter has been report start that again, sorry, a Cheltenham shop has been reportedly targeted by a prolific shoplifter, a court has heard. A 28-year-old man admitted carrying out a series of thefts at pets at home store in the town, stealing more than a thousand pounds worth of goods. The court was told he targeted the store multiple times, taking a total of 15 dog beds in just one week, along with additional thefts of pet food on separate occasions. In total, he admitted eight theft offences at the store, as well as a separate theft from another Cheltenham retailer. Magistrates have bowed him ahead of sentencing next month with strict conditions banning him from entering a number of retail parks in the area. The case highlights ongoing concerns around repeat shoplifting and the impact on local businesses. Now concerns have been raised over plans for the Golden Valley development in West Cheltenham. A local politician has objected to the first phase of proposals, which include an innovation centre, cafe, event space and a mobility hub on the land near Fiddler's Green Lane. The criticism centres on claims that the plans do not properly benefit the local community, particularly residents in Hester's Way, one of Cheltenham's more deprived areas. It's been urged, sorry, it's been agreed that the green space and wildlife areas near the site could be lost, while any environmental improvements would be delivered elsewhere in the town rather than locally. The objection also highlights concerns that this approach goes against earlier recognition promises to improve access to green space, biodiversity, and well-being in West Cheltenham. The plans are currently open for consultation with discussions expected to continue as the development progresses. Now, a popular UK pizza chain with a presence here in Cheltenham is set to close a number of its restaurants as part of a major restructuring. Francomanca has confirmed plans to shut around 16 sites across the UK with up to 225 jobs potentially affected. The company says rising costs, including higher taxes, wages, and operating costs, have made some locations no longer sustainable. At this stage, it's not yet clear which specific restaurants will be closing and whether Cheltenham will be affected. The move highlights wider challenges facing the UK hospitality sector with many businesses continuing to deal with increasing financial pressures. Well, since I put that in the news, I can tell you I heard, as they say on the grapes wine, so this is not definitely speculation that the one in Cheltenham will be closing. But what I'll do is I'll keep an eye out when I'm out shopping, and if I see signs going up, I will let you know later in the weeks. Now, with local elections approaching, residents in Cheltenham are being reminded of key dates and what to expect ahead of polling day. Elections for Cheltenham Borough Council will take place on Thursday the 7th of May, with half of the council 40 seats up for contest, one in each of the town's 20 wards. This year's vote comes after a disrupted build-up with the election initially set to be suspended before the decision was reversed following a legal challenge. It is also expected to be one of the final elections for the council in its current form as plans move forward to replace existing local authorities in Gloucestershire with a new super council structure in the coming years. Voters are being reminded that they must be registered by Monday the 20th of April and will be and will need to bring valid photo ID in order to cast their vote on the day. Polling stations will be open from 7 a.m. till 10 p.m. with results expected the following afternoon. Locally, key issues include housing, town centre development and the future of major sites, alongside wider concerns such as the cost of living. The Liberal Democrats currently hold a strong majority on the council, but other parties, including the Greens, Conservatives, and the Reform UK, will be looking to make gains. Now, finally, some good news for a Cheltenham business. Independent pet retailer B More Bob has been named the overall winner of a nation national window display competition celebrating creative across the UK pet industry. The shop took top spot in the Pause in Spring 2026 campaign, which invited retailers to design eye-catching spring-themed displays showcasing their products and connection with the local community. Judges praised the high standards of entry from across the country, with Beamorbob standing out for its bright, colourful display that caught the attention of customers and passers by alike. The competition highlights the important role independent retailers play in their communities, with organizers saying it is a chance to celebrate the creativity and passion of local businesses. A great result for Cheltenham and a reminder of the strength of independent shops in the town. So big congratulations to Be More Bob. They do have some wonderful shop displays, I can promise you. Okay, on to Cheltenham Sport. Now Cheltenham Town FC left it late again, but they picked up a brilliant 2-1 win over Gillenham on Tuesday night. The Robins went behind early but showed real character in the second half, with Isaac Hutchinson pulling things level to get town back into it. And then right at the death, late drama once more, Mofal fired home a stoppage time winner to seal all three points and spark big celebrations at the EV Charger Point Stadium. Cheltenham Town made it back-to-back wins with a narrow 1-0 victory over Newport County on Saturday. It was a tight and hard-fought game at the EV Charger Point Stadiums with chances at both ends, but no breakthrough before half time. Cheltenham came closest early on, hitting the woodwork twice. Matt Baker saw a header come back off the crossbar, and Joe Day was also called into action with a strong save just before the break. Newport had their moments too, with Harrison Biggins striking the bar in the second half as the visitors looked to take control. But the decisive moment came late on. In the 82nd minute, Mofow did well to bring down the ball inside the box and set up George Miller, who calmly finished to give Cheltenham the lead. That goal proved enough to secure all three points, extending Cheltenham's unbeaten run and continuing a strong finish to the season. So well done to Cheltenham. Two games and two more wins. Now just before we go on to the community notice boards, if you have anything you'd like to say about what you've heard on today's podcast or what you may hear, or you want to promote an event, a new business, or wish to send my send me a press release or anything for any reason, then you can get in touch via the website, social media, or you can email me on info at all thingscheltenham.co.uk right on to the Cheltenham community notice boards. Now there's been a new business that's just opened, and this one's a little bit different. It's called SoFetch, and it's a luxury dog grooming studio, and it's been built from the ground up right here in town. Now, this isn't your typical quick tidy up for the dog. The focus here is very much on a full experience, how your dog looks, feels, and even how comfortable they are while being groomed. The studio offers everything from full grooms to maintenance sessions and even a spa-style treatments and enrichment walks. All tailored for each individual dog. And what stood out to me is what's happening behind the scenes as well. There's a real focus on doing things properly. From high-end equipment to canine safety and comfort, and even sustainable practices like recycling dog hair. The owner, Claudia, says she wanted to create something that feels different, more elevated, more thoughtful, and somewhere people actually feel excited to walk into. So if you're a dog owner in Sheltenham and you're looking for something a bit more premium, this could be the one to check out. That's Sofetch, now open in Cheltenham. And finally on the community notice boards, we have a big congratulations to Hallow Grounds Coffee who are celebrating their fourth anniversary. Since opening, they've become a familiar and much-loved spot locally, serving up great coffee, fresh bakes, and a warm welcome to everyone who stops by. So a big well done to the team at Hello Grounds. They'll be making the occasion, they'll be marking the occasion, sorry, on the 27th, 7th of April. But being they don't up until the Wednesdays, they're actually celebrating on Wednesday the 29th. So if you're nearby, it's a great chance to pop along, show your support, and help them celebrate. So happy birthday once more to the fourth anniversary to Hallowed Grounds, and here's to many more. Right, as you've possibly noticed, there's no guests because we've stopped having them. Now we've got to move on to the events. And we start with something that sounds like a proper night out to kick off this year's fringe season, which goes from May the 22nd to May the 30th. Now the Cheltenham Playhouse is hosting the fringe festival launch variety show, and it's being described as a night of glamour, glitter, and some seriously draw dropping talent. Guiding you through the night is the sensational Latina Ballroom, a drag queen host bringing plenty of laughs, big energy, and a bit of sparkle to the stage. And the lineup sounds brilliant. You've got cabaret, live music, magic, a real mix of performances all packed into one evening. There's a London burlesque performer, Miss Coco Amour, high energy Hulu Circus from Rafferty Love, illusionist David Olnwick bringing some dark magic into the mix, and even the Cheltones choir as well. So if you really so it's really is one of those shows where anything could happen. And that's the kind of whole point of fringe. It's all about creativity, community, and something a little bit different. And this is the official launch night for this year's Cheltenham Fringe Festival. So if you fancy something bold, a bit lively, and a proper mix of entertainment, this is a great one to check out. Now that's Friday, the 22nd of May, and it starts at 7:30. Tickets are from£15, and there'll be a link in the description. And then there are loads more events going on through the Fringe Festival until the 30th. So do check them out. You'll find it along the promenade outside Waterstones, where a whole line of stalls take over the productionised area. There's a fantastic mix on offer from meats to fresh fruit and veg, plus cakes, bread, cheese, preserves, pickles, and even plants. And on top of that, I can tell you there is a lady there who does cakes and she does the most amazing bread pudding. And for the older generation, you'll know what I'm on about. And to my knowledge, it's the only place I've found it. So uh if you like bread pudding, she's the place to go, but you do need cash, she doesn't take any cards. Now, if you're looking for another kind of market next weekend, the Suffolks are kicking off their first market of the year with a jazz twist. It starts bright and early at 5 a.m. and runs through till 6 a.m. It's a gentle morning walk where you can experience the dawn chorus and it's most spectacular as the meadow comes alive with bird song while the rest of the town is still waking up. You don't need any experience or knowledge of birds, just wrap up warm and enjoy one of the quietest and most peaceful times of day in a beautiful setting. It's completely free and they'll meet outside the Meadow calf at Cox's Meadow. If you're interested, you can let them know you're coming via the link in the description, and it's a really nice way to start your day. She'll be performing live from 3:30, bringing a mix of jazz and saxophone lead music right into the shop. So if you fancy something a bit different while you're out shopping, that's one to check out. And I can promise you she is one of the best saxophone players probably in the country. She's up there at the very top. Earlier in the day, though, there is something for families over at St. Margaret's Hall. The Cheltenham Mum to Mum Market runs from one till three, offering baby and kids nearly new items. It's a great chance to pick up bargains and pass on items you no longer need. Now, all across Friday and Saturday, this is different, the West End Sewing Centre on Henrietta Street is hosting a special Benini event that's running from 10 till 5 both days with demonstrations and a chance to see the latest sewing machines and equipment up close. So whether it's live music, shopping, hobbies, or a night out, there's plenty happening across Cheltenham this week. Now looking ahead to the early May bank holidays, there's a great family event coming up here in Charton Kings. It's the Chart on Kings Village Fate, taking place on Monday the 4th of May, from 12 midday through till 5 pm at the Royal Pub and St. Mary's Church. And the best part, it's completely free to attend. So whether you're after something for the garden or just fancy a browse, there's plenty to choose from. And it all goes supporting of improving Pitville Park. So you'll be helping a great community space at the same time. Now looking ahead to something a little further ahead in May, and definitely want to keep in your radar.
